Missouri GOP: Tax Cuts For The Rich, Your VOTE Means Nothing
The UAW endorsed Proposition A which raised the minimum wage and provided Paid Leave continues to be attacked in Jefferson City. Last week Senate Democrats filibustered an attempt to bring a repeal of Proposition A to the floor for a vote.
Several weeks ago this local sent ten members to lobby for Proposition A at the Capitol.. We heard from some state legislators that the cost of paid leave would be a burden for small businesses. There is no doubt that it could be a concern. However, we offered a solution. We asked if there was enough money in the budget to afford a Capital Gains tax cut that was being debated would it be possible to use some of those funds to provide a tax incentive for small businesses that implement the paid leave voted for by Missourians in November.
Well lookee….here. The Missouri Independent just posted Missouri is sleepwalking into a half-billion dollar tax cut for the rich…
Missouri lawmakers are debating a tax cut that will mostly benefit the wealthiest in the state, while relying on an unrealistic estimate of what it will cost.
The bill would eliminate all state taxes on capital gains, or profits from selling investments such as corporate stock, real estate, antiques and artwork. No state with an income tax fully exempts capital gains, in no small part because doing so would let wealthy people collect tax-free passive income while continuing to tax middle class workers and people whose savings are in retirement accounts.
The priorities of Republican legislators are clear. When it comes to the rich they are prepared to do what no other state has done and hope it works out. When it comes to honoring voters and workers there concern is underwhelming. We deserve better.
