The Biggest Thing Going:

Legislative Battle Over Sick Leave Continues

Pro-Labor Senators Tracy McCreery (D-STL) and Maggie Nurrenbern (D-Clay) held the floor to defend Sick Leave as the clock (literally) passed midnight

Republican attempts to overturn voter-approved earned-sick leave stalled session for a second week, as Senate Democrats maintained a filibuster to protect workers’ rights. House Bill 567 seeks to completely eliminate the sick leave portion of the voter-approved ballot initiative, as well as remove the automatic minimum wage escalator.

Senate Democrats have been holding the floor for large chunks of time over the last two weeks to prevent the measure from passing. With only 3 weeks left in the legislative session this has clearly become the biggest anti-worker effort of the year. Talks of Republican efforts to shut down debate on the issue are gathering steam, with the Senate Democrats continuing to hold strong.
