Union Advantage: SUB Pay and Union Dues

Will you be paid enough SUB pay for three weeks to cover your union dues for the entire year? Some members have asked what they get for their union dues. Previous posts on this site have shown the union advantage regarding 401k benefits and wages. This post will cover SUB pay that members at Wentzville should receive for this three week layoff. It will be hard to compare to non-union workers as most have never imagined having Supplemental Unemployment Benefits (SUB). Since we can’t compare let’s look at how this benefit compares to the union dues required to cover the collective bargaining that secured SUB pay.

Here we go….

Union Dues

A full-time, full-scale member earns a base rate of $38,07 + $1.10 (COLA) = $39.17 an hour.

Multiply that $39.17 by 2.5 straight time hours = $97.92 a month union dues

$97.92 x 12 months = $1,175.04 union dues a year.

How much will a member receive in SUB pay for the three weeks of this layoff?

The current contract language, which is pictured below, calls for SUB to replace 74% of weekly pay. Let’s get those numbers…

Hourly wage of $39.17 x 40 hours = $1,566.80 per week.

Multiply $1,566.80 x 74% = $1,159,43 SUB benefit.

We have to account for unemployment as part of that $1,159.43.

Subtract the Missouri UI payment of $320 and the company is responsible for a weekly payment of $839.43.

$839.43 x 3 weeks = $2,518.29 Total SUB Benefit.

Now, let’s get the answer to the question…

Total three week SUB Benefit of $2,518.29 – $1,174.04 yearly dues = $1,344.25

Yes, the SUB benefit for three weeks will more than cover the cost of union dues for the entire year! You will also have $1,344.25 over and above! That is another union advantage!
