Guest Opinion: The Pro-Act Would Protect Against The Bosses Axe

The St. Louis Labor Tribune carries this opinion piece by Mark Gruenberg.  Enjoy Protecting Against Musk’s Meat Axe Argues For The Pro-Act…

Why do those employees join AFGE, NFFE, the Treasury Employees, National Nurses United and other unions with federal workers? Because of protections against arbitrary dismissals. Curbs include filing Labor law-breaking charges and grievances, forcing bosses to justify firings, or pay up.

Those same protections, plus better pay and benefits, are available to private sector workers when they unionize and reach a first contract. The PRO Act would make unionization easier, and would force bosses to actually bargain with workers once the workers go union, or face an impartial arbitrator who could force that first contract down company throats.

If bosses still break the law, the PRO Act would hit them with nice big fines, not just against firms, but against individual CEOs, board members and other corporate criminal labor law-breakers.

We’d like to see repeat offenders – Musk, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Howard Schultz of Starbucks and the entire Walton clan who run Walmart come to mind – take “perp walks” to prison, too. Such violators can be marched to the hoosegow in South Korea, but not here. But you can’t have everything (nuts!). We can have the rest of it, though, if and when the PRO Act takes effect.
