UAW Pay vs Illinois Median Pay: Unions Matter!

Last month, we compared UAW pay vs Missouri Pay and found a big difference. Now, let’s compare with the home of many local 2250 members – Illinois. Illinois has a higher median pay than Missouri but will it be more than UAW pay? Voronoi has published a colorful map of the United States with the median salary of workers in each state clearly listed. The median income figure is the salary at which half of the state earns more and half earn less. So the question for members of UAW Local 2250 is which side are you on? Let’s run the numbers…

UAW: Base pay is $38.07 + a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) of $1.10 per hour = $39.17

Let’s multiply that $39.17 x 2080 annual work hours (52 weeks @ forty hours a week) = $81,473 a year.

Let’s compare:

UAW Annual Pay: $81,473

Illinois Median Pay: $65,500

Difference: UAW + $15,973

Well, Well, Well a UAW member at GM is well above the median salary in Illinois – $15,973 above!

But, what about union dues? Yeah, the UAW member would of paid $1,175 in dues for the year. So let’s subtract those dues from their annual pay to see if it pays to be a member.

$15,973 – $1,175 = $14,978 above the Illinois median pay after union dues!
