$5 For The Fight Helps Tornado Relief

The St. Louis Labor Tribune shares this story of how $5 for the Fight is helping those affected by the tornado in St. Louis.

Labor Council President Pat Kellett said $48,000 had been donated to the fund as of May 31. But the demand is still great, and donations are still needed to help union members facing dire circumstances.

“It’s the very essentials we’re talking about,” Kellett said. “Kim Bartholomew (president of UNITE HERE Local 74) and her local have been reaching out to members. We’re talking about people who need $50 or $100 gift cards for diapers and food. Everyone, every union they talk to it’s the essentials – diapers, refrigerators to replace the food because it’s all gone bad, people living in hotels because they can’t get live in their home.”

Even with the donations that have been collected, Kellett says more help is desperately needed to help union members in need.

“These are union people we’re talking about, so they’re working, but they’ve lost everything.”
