Is Your UAW Prescription Drug Benefit Saving You Any Money?
Is your UAW contract making your life better? If you or a member of your family takes a prescription drug or two what do you pay compared to what other Americans pay for their prescriptions? The chart below looks at the average co-payments and con-insurance for Americans. The average copay for generic drugs is $12 while brand name drugs carry an average copay of $36.

How does that compare with the prices in your negotiated contract? Let’s see. Below is the chart of your prescription benefit from Appendix A of the national agreement.
If you bought your prescription drug at retail the UAW negotiated price is $6 for generic and $12 for brand name drugs will you save any money?
Just for fun let’s run some numbers. In this example your family takes two generic drugs and one brand name drug.
Average American drug costs:
Generic $12 x 2 drugs = $24
Brand Name x 1 $36
Total Cost $60
UAW Negotiated Prescription Drug Benefit
Generic $6 x 2 drugs = $12
Brand Name x 1 $12
Total Cost $24
Difference of just three prescriptions: $36!
Obviously, this may be a recurring savings for prescriptions that are part of a ongoing health program. There are additional savings from using the mail order program. I don’t know about you but that $36 savings per month, every month adds up….
