Key findings<\/h4>\n

  • S<\/span>triking workers<\/span>\u00a0in most states are disqualified<\/span>\u00a0f<\/span>rom<\/span>\u00a0receiving<\/span>UI,<\/span>\u00a0which\u00a0<\/span>opens the door for employers to undermine union <\/span><\/span>negotiations by engaging in bad faith tactics.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Only two states \u2014New Jersey and New York\u2014<\/span>currently\u00a0<\/span>extend UI to striking workers. Lawmakers in 13\u00a0<\/span>additional<\/span>states have previously introduced\u00a0<\/span>or are actively considering such policies.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • EPI estimates that t<\/span>he cost of extending\u00a0<\/span>employment insurance<\/span>\u00a0to strikers would\u00a0<\/span>represent<\/span>\u00a0between 0.04% to 0.96% of a given state\u2019s total UI expenditures\u2014an almost negligible\u00a0<\/span>share<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The<\/span>se policies\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0only\u00a0<\/span>impact<\/span>\u00a0striking workers; they also\u00a0<\/span>help stabilize the economy by\u00a0<\/span>keep<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0dollars flowing to communities where a strike is taking place.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
