Politico goes right to the heart of the labor movement in A Top Federal Labor Official Declares “War” On Employer “Captive Audience” Meetings.<\/p>\n

NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo called the meetings “inherently coercive” during union organizing efforts.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0message to NLRB field offices\u00a0across the country, Abruzzo argued that these types of mandatory meetings \u2014 during which employers present arguments against forming a union \u2014 \u201cinherently involve an unlawful threat that employees will be disciplined or suffer other reprisals if they exercise their protected right not to listen to such speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said she intends to ask the board to overturn decades of precedent by outlawing mandatory attendance for such meetings \u2014 which critics call \u201ccaptive audience\u201d gatherings \u2014 and ensuring that workers\u2019 participation is \u201ctruly voluntary.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to larger gatherings, the memo also seeks to outlaw instances where employees are \u201ccornered by management\u201d while performing their jobs to talk to them about unionization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
